UConn’s Charlie Villanueva to Declare for NBA Draft?

ESPN’s Andy Katz reports that Connecticut forward Charlie Villanueva is expected to declare for the NBA draft and not return for his junior season.

Charlie Villanueva

Bad move. Don’t do it, Charlie. Yes, I’m selfish. I’m a huge UConn fan, and while they tanked this year, my prediction is that they were a lock for next year. They were immature this year - mostly freshman and sophomore players.

Charlie had declared for the NBA while in high school. He was smart to wait then. He should still wait one more year. Perhaps he’ll be drafted in the top ten, but I think one more year will make him one of the best in the country.

UConn fans shouldn’t worry too much. With the remaining cast of characters and the addition of a reputable incoming class, the 2005-2006 season should still put UConn up towads the top of the pack. Perhaps Andrew Bynum, a 7 foot, 280 pound center from Metuchen, New Jersey, can fill the void if Villanueva leaves.

Mark my words, with or without Villanueva, UConn is a final four team in 2005-2006.
