A-Rod Earns His Stripes

Wednesday, April 27th, 2005

A-Rod earns his stripes

Finally. His second year with the NY Yankees, and he previously hadn’t shown he was worth the big bucks, not that anyone really is. However, last night may have been what Alex Rodriguez needed to win the fans over.

Here were A-Rod’s stats last night in a 12-4 win over the LA Angels:

4-5, 10 RBI: 3 homeruns (2-run, 3-run, and grand-slam), 1 RBI single

Star Wars Celebration III Convention image

According to E!Online (via Yahoo! News) and Coming Soon, George Lucas announced at last weekend’s Star Wars convention that he is developing two television shows based on his Star Wars empire!!!

According to the site

“For his first appearance at a Star Wars convention in 17 years, Lucas made a big splash. During a Q&A session, he announced that he is going to produce a 3-D animated action series expanding on the Cartoon Network’s Emmy-winning Clone Wars. Then he dropped a bigger bomb, confirming a live-action Star Wars spinoff series is in the works.”

The article continues by explaining

“According to Lucas, both shows will take place during the period between the end of Star Wars: Episode III–Revenge of the Sith and the original Star Wars (aka Episode IV–A New Hope), when the Emperor became all-powerful and started hunting the Jedi down.”

Sexual Double Standards

Friday, April 22nd, 2005

Within the last few years, there’s been a lot of media coverage regarding females who have committed statutory rape against minors. I’m not sure if the incident rate is rising or if it just happens to be something the media is paying more attention to.

Nonetheless, it angers me that popular culture glamorizes it yet abhores male statutory rape. Two recent examples in American culture are found in television and music:

  • Television>Desperate Housewives - there is a storyline that follows one wife who is cheating on her husband with a high school student. To be fair, I believe it is mentioned that this young man is 18 years old. However, a similar incident that did involve an underage young man occurred last year on the The O.C. television show.
  • Music>Fountains of Wayne - they have a song entitled “Stacy’s Mom” which depicts a young adolescent boy’s fantasy of being with an older woman. The song suggests that “Stacy’s Mom” might also have feelings for the boy.

Bringing the National Pastime to the Nation’s Capital

Friday, April 15th, 2005
Bush throwing out first pitch at first Washington Nationals home game.

It’s been 34 years coming, but finally America’s pastime returned to the nation’s capital. Yesterday was the Washington National’s home opener. The field looked great, despite using the refurbished RFK stadium, previously used for football, the HFStival, and other events. I have to hand it to the folks for working up the grounds, but it seems there were problems with the scoreboard.

Mel Proctor and Ron Darling were announced on April 3rd/4th as the television tandem, so you see that a lot of the logistics have fallen into place only moments before the home opener.

Begin Rant…

I need to rant for a moment, however. Naming the team the “Nationals” (horrible nickname - the “Nats”!! Just think how bad it might sound when people chant “Go-Nats…Go-Nats” - pretty close to yelling the name for male genitalia, huh?) and playing in the National League? What a boring name, in my opinion.

Yes, I did have an alternate suggestion. In fact, back in the mid 90s when the Washington Bullets basketball team was going through a name change, some then roommates and I came up with a great name and vision…

We felt the team should be called the “Washington Justice.” It fit nicely as the replacement name for the basketball team because

  • the team could play on the nicknamed “Supreme Court”and
  • the team could wear warm up pull-overs that look like judge robes

In addition, the logo would be a hammer and gavel, looking very aggressive. Okay, so perhaps this idea cannot fully translate to baseball, but wouldn’t the “Washington Justice” name with a hammer and gavel logo seem much nicer that the “Nationals”? Granted, the Nationals inspires the feeling of American baseball nastalgia, but having the same name as the league name is silly. Should we then rename the Yankees and call them the Americans?

End Rant…

With that off my chest, I still might adopt the “Nats” as my NL team :)

Cookie, Cookie, Cookie Starts With ‘V’

Monday, April 11th, 2005

Is this political correctness run amok or is it the sensible use of television? It is being widely reported that the Sesame Street television show is giving an extreme makeover to one of its popular characters, the Cookie Monster. In a carb conscience culture, the show has decided that the character should model healthy eating habits to its audience of youngsters.

The BBC article notes that

“Almost one in three children in the US is now overweight, as opposed to one in 25 in the UK.”

76% Say Jesus Rose from the Dead

Friday, April 8th, 2005

A recent Rasmussen Report finds that

“76% of American adults believe that Jesus Christ rose from the dead…just 14% disagree.”

I find these poll results absolutely amazing, considering the deluge of liberal thought here in the Washington Beltway, the assault on Christianity, and the assertion by many liberals that the United States does not have Christian roots. Fortunately, many people in the United States do not feel the same way.

I’d be interested to see a demographic breakdown, but unfortunately, I am not a paying member of the Rasmussen Reports. If you have a breakdown by demographics, please pass along this information.

UConn’s the Early Favorite to Win it All

Tuesday, April 5th, 2005

UConn Huskies

Just remember…you heard it here first before ESPN’s Andy Katz and Dick Vitale made their picks for next season. Okay, so perhaps I didn’t say they’d win it all, but I was being modest.

Here’s a short excerpt from Andy’s article:

“The Huskies bring back one of the top scoring point guards in Marcus Williams. They’ll have a potential lottery pick who should star even more in wing Rudy Gay, and a deep frontcourt with Josh Boone, Hilton Armstrong and Ed Nelson. The wings are set with Denham Brown and Rashad Anderson. And, barring another medical setback, the Huskies will get the point guard they thought would be playing this season in A.J. Price.”

Sandy Berger, Slap on the Wrist

Tuesday, April 5th, 2005

The Sandy Berger story really upsets me because I hate it when justice does not appear to be parsed equally between people on both sides of the aisle.

For those of you unaware of Sandy Berger’s crime, he willfully entered the National Archives and stole highly classified sensitive documents. He repeatedly lied to investigators but finally pleaded guilty in exchange for a small fine and no jail time. Can you imagine Condoleeza Rice getting away with the same lax justice? Here’s a portion of the Washington Times op-ed:

“Mr. Berger committed an egregious violation of the rules that govern the handling of sensitive national-security documents. His offense would cost most any government employee his job, security clearance and future in government. Quite possibly it would cost him his freedom. On top of his crime, Mr. Berger lied about it to federal investigators. But Mr. Berger won’t likely suffer any of the consequences. For those who suspect that different rules apply at the top, a case like this is reason for cynicism.”

Take Me Out to the Ballgame

Sunday, April 3rd, 2005

There’s not much better than opening day, but a first game of the season between the Yankees and the Red Sox? Wow! Randy Johnson versus David Wells. I love the Spring.

And just a little hint as to where the inspiration came for naming my dog…

Liberal Food Fight

Friday, April 1st, 2005

Didn’t liberals get the note that the South Beach and Atkins diets were the new trend?

Well, it seems now that the new trend is to douse carb-unfriendly foods on your local conservative.

Story 1:

“Commentator and former presidential candidate Pat Buchanan cut short an appearance after an opponent of his conservative views doused him with salad dressing.”

Story 2:

“Even a pie in the face couldn’t silence conservative pundit William Kristol. Kristol, editor of The Weekly Standard and former chief of staff to Vice President Dan Quayle, was splattered by a student during a speech about U.S. foreign policy at Earlham College Tuesday.”

Perhaps these liberal demonstrators are angry because they’ve been on these diets too long. Let’s order them a nice Big Mac with fries.
