Kiefer Sutherland of 24

I wish I could attend this event hosted today by Rush Limbaugh at the Heritage Foundation.

Featured guests include Michael Chertoff, writers and producers from the ‘24′ show, and cast members taking the roles of Chloe O’Brian, President Charles Logan, and Tony Almeida. Unfortunately, the event is sold out, but you can watch it streamed live at 10 a.m. E.S.T. at Heritage.org. or here.

Truth in Cartoons

Mohammad Cartoon

I am sympathetic towards Muslims who feel that any visual representation of Mohammad is considered an abomination. I also understand how offensive it can be when mainstream media marginalizes or even mocks the significance of a religious figure - the recent image of Kanye West as Jesus on the cover of Rolling Stone comes to mind (as a sidebar, as La Shawn Barber points out, could Kanye have gotten away with posing as Mohammad on the cover?).

A thoughtful Muslim, Imran Anwar, provides us with his take on the cartoon situation:

“Would all these “fair and balanced” media and papers publish cartoons (in the name of free speech) showing Prophet Jesus Christ as a big Homosexual telling his apostles and followers to become Christian priests and rape little boys in Church? After all, this is a constant “current events” topic, especially in America and who knows in how many other countries, where the church is consantly hiding and protecting abusive priests who molest children.”

Imran brings up an interesting point. What we’re talking about is disparaging a religious figure, and certainly Jesus has gotten his share. Movies like “The Life of Brian” and “The Last Temptation of Christ” are only the tip of the iceberg, but had a cartoon shown Jesus raping a child, I’m sure the Catholic Church, and all Christians, would be rightfully up in arms.

The difference, however, is that some Muslims make matters worse by proving that there’s an element of truth to the images aligning mainstream Muslims with violent and uncivilized behavior. Don’t you find it ironic that a cartoon aligning violence with Muslims then spurs on violence? Now Denmark has issued a warning to its citizens against traveling to 14 Muslim nations for fear of violence.

It seems that the truth hurts, even if the truth is utterly offensive. Although adolescent in nature, at least Iran has responded in a nonviolent manner.

Sean Penn in Iran

Friday, August 26th, 2005

I’ve been reading Sean Penn’s San Fransico Chronicle diary of his June journey to Iran. He gives us a glimpse of his antisocial personality when he says in his day 3 post

“I am a reasonably social person, but that isn’t to say that I have been in a group or a party of more than four or five people without the support of alcohol in as long as I can remember.”

Muslims to Take Over the World by 2114!

Monday, July 25th, 2005

After reading a recent op-ed from the New York Times (hat tip to Nomad @ mod-blog), I found myself alarmed to see that extremist jihadist ideology is being introduced to children by an American video game maker.

The software maker appears to produce some entertaining games for children of the Muslim faith, but “Ummah Defense I” stands out for its underlying message of intolerance for other faiths:

“It’s the year 2114 and the Earth is finally united under the Banner of Islam. As a member of the Intergalactic Muslim Council (IGMC), your job is to help coordinate Dawa efforts on other planets. You couldn’t be happier with your work, until the Flying Evil Robot Armada (FERM) attacks your home planet of Earth. It seems there was one disbeliever, known as Abu Lahab XVIII, left on Earth, and in his desperate attempt to deny the truth of Islam, he has constructed a whole army of robots to destroy the Earth and all of its Muslims. (He needs to use robots because all the humans had embraced Islam).”

Does this storyline suggest that mainstream Muslims feel that the whole world should be devoid of any person who does not share their faith? Are nonbelievers to be destroyed? What a great not-so-subtle way to brainwash Muslim children. At least Christians “brainwash” their children with games that promote love instead of hate.

WorldNetDaily: Statement of Group Claiming Responsibility

Note that both Iraq and Afghanistan are mentioned together. Caution: There is no conclusive proof at this time that this group is responsible for yesterday’s terrorism.

Liberals Avoid Personal Responsibility

Friday, July 8th, 2005

Abortion, welfare, social security reform, smaller government…these are a sampling of issues that divide many conservatives and liberals. I believe the difference of opinion lies, in part, with how both sides view “personal responsibility” and how it should be applied to today’s issues. I will argue in this post that conservatives tend to have an internal locus of control whereas liberals tend to have an external locus of control.

Rotter (1954) introduced the concept of “Locus of Control.”

According to Wilderdom:

External Locus of Control

Individual believes that his/her behavior is guided by fate, luck, or
other external circumstances

Internal Locus of Control

Individual believes that his/her behavior is guided by his/her personal
decisions and efforts.

If you read personal reactions to the bombing in London, it becomes evident that there are those persons who conveniently blame America or Britain for yesterday’s attacks. This assertion repulses me because the thinking is so flawed. Here are a few ridiculous reactions:

  • From the Daily Kos:

“There are consequences to the mess in Iraq. And today, we’re seeing one of them. Unfortunately, it won’t be the last.”

  • From HuguesT on Slashdot message boards:

“You fight terrorists with the Law. You treat terrorists as criminals. You hunt masterminds with Interpol. You capture them, and give them a fair trial.”

  • Charmaine Yoest reports on Power Line:

I interviewed three very ordinary, normal teenaged English Muslims, one with short spiky hair (dressed not unlike my 10 year-old-dude). All three seem to be parroting Muslim talking points. “The bombings were a conspiracy by Blair to generate support for the war,” they recited in a charming British accent.

  • From Nyago on Slashdot message boards:

Oh please, then what triggered 9/11? “War. The US attacked places bin Laden cared about. It doesn’t justify his actions but it does appear to be the motivating factor.”
